Rituals
for beginning a practice
Entering my yoga space with rituals helps me to break from
the everyday world to focus inward. Doing all these things
is like building a good foundation for a house. Because I
take the time to create a proper foundation, the rest unfolds
easily.
Here is my current ritual.
1. I make sure my space is just right. Does
it feel clean? Do I need to close the closet door? Pick stuff
up off the floor? Open the curtains? Open the window?
2. I set the mood. I light candles on an
altar (This is just my daughter’s old changing table.
The drawers hold music, videos, props, notebooks, and spare
candles, keeping all the clutter out of sight.) Some people
like to light incense, but it makes me congested. I use an
oil diffuser with essential
oils instead. The diffuser was a gift from a class participant
of mine, and I enjoy using it.

3.
I dedicate my practice to loved ones and places, such as Iraq
and Sudan, that are in my thoughts. I write the names of people
and places on strips of paper that I put into a fish bowl
filled with shells. I also write personal questions on which
I am seeking guidance.
I
wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing this a while back.
It would have felt put on. But, lately it has felt like a
genuine practice to me.
4.
I select music that feels right for right now. Sometimes the
first thing I choose isn’t right. I practice to a wide
variety of music, from new age to hard rock. Generally, though,
soft flowy music is less distracting and helps me to focus
on my body and emotions.
5.
I set out paper and a pen on the floor because I record my
practice. I keep track of everything in a Franklin
Planner. I have sections in my planner for practice notes,
article ideas, class discussion topics, class plans, and reading
notes. I use blank paper for all these sections, so I usually
leave the planner closed, but have blank paper and a pen handy.
I also light a couple of candles down on the floor so I can
see to write. Later, I’ll file these papers away in
their appropriate places.
I
sometimes use a digital recorder or tape recorder to record
my thoughts.
6.
I turn out the lights.
7.
I spread a nice lavender body balm on my body. Then I wash
my hands. If I don't, I'll slide all over my yoga mat.
8.
I used to begin my practice with meditation, but lately I
dance about, spin, or sometimes lie down on the floor, depending
on my mood.
I
hope by sharing my practice with you, you are inspired to
create personal rituals that lead you to more beautiful practice.
Namaste.
